Linux desktop share: what a milestone number actually measures
A method note on browser-based operating-system share, historical Linux milestones and the limits of global percentages.
A Linux desktop-share headline is only as useful as its source definition. The denominator can be web page views in a measurement network rather than all computers in use.
Read the measurement unit
Statcounter publishes operating-system share from its browser measurement network. Before repeating a percentage, specify desktop versus all platforms, geography, month and whether Chrome OS is reported separately. A figure from a web sample is not a census of installed machines, nor does it measure how many people are developers or use Linux at work.
Keep historical and current claims separate
An archived post noted the moment Linux crossed a particular threshold in one series. That remains a historical observation, not today’s value. The live Statcounter chart changes month to month and may revise its classifications. Use the current chart for a current number and link the exact date; do not silently update a 2023 headline with a 2026 value.
Ask a better follow-up
A share estimate can prompt useful questions: which hardware works well, how easy is installation, what accessibility tools are available and what support is realistic for a new user? Those questions require tests and documentation beyond a single market-share line. If comparing sources, check that they measure the same devices and regions before drawing a trend.

A filled historical observation
On 18 October 2026, we opened the Statcounter chart for desktop operating systems, worldwide, June 2023. The selected chart and its data response reported Linux at 3.18%. This is the historical series as retrieved on that date, not a claim about the value published in the original 2023 headline.

The page also displayed a separate September 2026 summary above the selected graph. That summary was not the June 2023 observation. A screenshot of the whole page without identifying the selected chart could therefore support the wrong number.
For a reproducible check, keep the selected date, platform and region together with the corresponding source CSV. Check the Linux row rather than inferring it from the chart's height. Do not add Chrome OS to it silently, change desktop to all platforms, or describe the percentage as a count of installed computers.
This fills one historical observation. It does not establish the first month Linux crossed 3%, the share of all users, an independent survey result or today's market share.
Limit: The article intentionally does not hard-code a “current” market-share percentage, because the live series changes.
